Praise for 'Lo the Old Pine

"A smart, sweeping, well-constructed album jammed tight with banjos and mandolins and a level of harmonies that does not come around very often"

Track Name: Hold the Light
I'll hold the light if you hold the hammer
And we'll get together these old sticks and stones
You split the wood and I’ll light the fire
And we’ll heat together this house good and warm

Blisters on my hands, I sit down begin to pray
Allow the sun to end this day

We’ll meet by the brook and I’ll throw you a line
Down by the mill, ‘lo the old pine
Sun get up high, baked like a bone
Draws running dry, the lamps getting low

Blisters on my hands, i sit down begin to pray
Bring the sun to end this day
Track Name: Logdriver's Lament
The mountains they vie for the eye of the sky
but the valley she lies while the river runs dry
We run cross the logs by day and by night
Dance on the river ‘till the morning daylight

And I watch as the river rolls away
Will she come? Will she stay?
And I watch as the day turns to gray
Will she come round my way

I’ve been up north where there’s cold sleet and snow
the north wind she blows till its eighteen below
The teamsters still pull coiffeurs still staying full
while up in the hollow sheep still growing wool

And I watch as the river rolls away
Will she come? Will she stay?
And I watch as the day turns to gray
Will she come round my way

My lady is my love, she speaks unto me
but it’s nothing I know and it’s nothing I see
My home on the mountain is where I’ll reside
I’ll stay here alone until the day I die.

And I watch as the river rolls away
Will she come? Will she stay?
And I watch as the day turns to gray
Will she come round my way
Track Name: For the Love of Her
I have been waiting
I have been saving
Water's rising, but for the love of her
I ain't going nowhere

Waves out on the ocean
Wander across the sea
What I'd give to be returned
And assured not to leave

But I'll throw off all the bowlines
Cast off from the dock
Who doth not answer to the rudder shall answer to the rock

Mountains rise before me
Black skies gather round
Red dirt land, she calls to me
And begs for rain to breathe

The water it rises slowly
A pall comes over me
Lighting strikes above the valley
And for a moment, clarity

I have been waiting
I have been saving
Water's rising, but for the love of her
I ain't going nowhere
Track Name: Sea Swells
Sunrise crashes and pulls me
Riptide pulls me out to sea
Diamonds arise far from the key
On top of blue swells of sea

How long my deity
Dances on blue swells of sea
Eyes hold on the horizon line
Not to yield, to seek, to find

And I know you'll come back with a new resolute mask
And I know you'll return with the lessons that you've learned
And the memories you've saved and the lonesome you blamed

Three foot rollers on Buzzard's Bay
Cuts green water into gray
Chop does send me o'er the side
My heart for her does abide

How long my deity
Sails across blue swells of sea
She tacks up against the wind
I've one goal in this life to live

And I know you'll come back With a new resolute mask
And I know you'll return with the lessons that you've learned
And the memories you've saved and the lonesome you blamed

And I know you'll come back With a new resolute mask
And I know you'll return with the lessons that you've learned
And I know that we'll go on as if we didn't know
That all hope comes right down to whatever we have found
Track Name: Birches Burn
The birches burn in the field at night
Late in the day by the pale moonlight
As it became, the sun grew weare’
The birches burn and you feel so near
Track Name: Slide Lake
Son they told me go up where the gold grows
Lake County Colorado I'll make you my home

Build a cabin in the pines under the Great Divide
Say my grace and pick all day from the mountain side

Left a wife and kids to tend the Atlantic tide
And I made my way west to a city in the sky
Ten thousand feet high and a million miles away
I write unanswered letters and send them every day

I worked in the smelter, I worked for the man
I worked selling coffee out of my tin can
But I'd never had a life like this under the blood red sky
Where the earth is ever-changing, and nobody asks you why

I have seen the ages, I have been to war
I have grown up tall, man, thought that I was more
But the great sky closes in now, a breath I try to take
I’ve reconciled losing my life on the banks of slide lake.

Then one night a bunch of us packed in to the saloon
Somebody said, "you know we'd make a good platoon
Homestake is rich in silver, there's an old mine up there,
the Herald say you can try your luck, but only if you dare."

We packed up extra rations, our canary on the sled
Snow was up to our thighs, until we reached the shed
We stashed our gear and made it clear by spring we would return
With ore to spare and fame to bare, and enough money to burn

I have seen the ages, I have been to war
I have grown up tall, man, thought that I was more
But the great sky closes in now, a breath I try to take
I’ve reconciled losing my life on the banks of slide lake.

The winter there above the trees was cold and dark and raw
But by day we picked at the mountain's hip, not waiting for the thaw
The wind whipped our backs, as we pounded the mighty stone
By night we'd settle by the fire, telling stories of our home

And had i a chance to speak, at the laying of my grave
I'd ask my love to join me, but my choices i would stay
For it were a blessing, to watch it as it came
The slide that took me under, was a sight of god the same
Track Name: West Street
Climb up to the top of the oak tree
Collect all the apples on the ground
Pile the leaves once they fall down
You’ve been here before, you know what I’ve found.

Ride your bike past the tracks
Round the bend and you’re coming back
Fall down and scrape your knee
Get back on, for all to see

I know I’m going home
But I’m out here alone
I know it won’t be long
Before I’m here I know

Stare out toward the vacant cabin
It calls to you, it pulls you in
Reach out to it all over again
For the first time, you enter in

Missing doors, broken class
The story never told unfolds
Hidden below the tall pine
Stay here for a while, stay here for…

I know I’m going home
But I’m out here alone
I know it won’t be long
Before I’m here I know

Diamond station go chase them away
Hold them close, don’t scare them away

Climb up to the top of the oak tree
Collect all the apples on the ground
Pile the leaves once they fall down
You’ve been here before, you know what I’ve found.
